KOTA KINABALU: There were no fatalities but at least eight people were injured when an explosion occurred after a train collided with an oil tanker in front of a fuel station near the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) yesterday evening.
In the 5.30pm accident, the passenger train was heading to Papar when the tanker was turning into the fuel station.
However, the tanker was not quick enough to completely cross the railway tracks and the train rammed into it.
Some of the passengers managed to escape by leaping out of the carriages after two explosions occurred some 10 minutes after the collision.
The tanker also caught fire and the blaze immediately spread to the first and second coaches.
There were others who were trapped inside the carriages and had to be rescued by firefighters. Those injured were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Fire engines from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) and from stations in Sembulan, Jalan Lintas and Penampang were also at the scene to extinguish the fire.
They were also assisted by a water tanker and two fire engines from the Airport Fire and Rescue Unit.
The blaze was put under control at about 6.40pm.
The road heading to the area was heavily congested because motorists heading to Putatan and Papar were not allowed to pass through.
City Police Chief ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria confirmed eight people were injured when contacted by New Sabah Times yesterday.
He said the lorry driver in his 40s’ has been taken by police for further investigation, while the 51-year-old train driver sustained light injuries on his legs.

Semalam, balek dari Surau, bapa cp ada cerita, katanya keretapi langgar lori minyak di KK.. meletup.. mungkin ada yang mati.. dia dengar cerita tuh dari kawan kawan dia di surau la..jadi cp tanya, area mana keretapi tu belanggar? bapa cp bilang, ndak tau jugak, mungkin tempat tu tiada pagar keselamatan.. jadi cp cakap, mungkin yg depan Airport tuh, sebab sana ada satu stesen minyak SHELL yg tiada pagar keselamatan..bapa cakap, ya, dia tu la tuh.. jadi tadi balek dari umah makcik, bukak lappy trus cari video d youtube..
so kalau korang baca dia atas, Alhamdulillah, tiada kemalangan jiwa dilaporkan, cuma 8 orang jak yg cedera.. tapi, kawan kawan d facebook sibuk pulak cerita ada 18 orang yg maut dalam tragedi tuh.. cp pun tak tau mana satu yang betul, sabah times ka, kawan kawan facebook cp tuh..
walau apa pun, cp ucapkan takziah dan turut bersimpati kepada mangsa yang terlibat dalam tragedi semalam tuh.. 

dan dikesempatan ini juga, cp turut berduka cita atas pemergian pakcik cp, Allahyarham Hj Harun Bin Hamzah yang kembali ke Rahmatullah sekitar jam 5 pagi tadi di hospital Queen Elizebeth..Semoga Allah Mencucuri Rahmat Ke Atas Beliau dan Menempatkan Beliau Dalam Kalangan Orang yang Beriman.. Amin..
